Labor is a stressful process, especially for a mother who is heading in for the first time. You feel that whatever happens inside labour room room will change your as well as the little one's life for ever. And it does. 

What can you do to ease the stress. Here are few breathing techniques to calm you and your baby in the womb to prepare you for a calmer, more controlled childbirth. 

Deep, rhythmic breathing during labour maximizes the amount of oxygen available to you and your baby. Fortunately, normal breathing is rhythmic and repetitive. Concentrating on each breath as it comes in and goes out clams your mind and relaxes your body. Hold each of your breath longer than the previous one and see how your body gives in to rejuvenation of oxygen.

Stressful or frightening situations give rise to panic-breathing. These comprise of short and shallow puffs of air making you light-headed and seem to make you out of control.Practice these relaxation techniques during pregnancy so they become a habit and come in easier during labour:

Repetitive sounds tend to lull you into relaxation mode. Repeat a word that means a lot to you like "aum" which connects you spiritually. Every time you exhale, make it longer so you empty your lungs and fill in more oxygen rich air.

Count your breaths. If you find it difficult to concentrate on one word, try counting your own breaths. As you breathe in, count slowly up to three or four, or whatever number seems comfortable for you. As you breathe out, count to three or four again. You may find that it's more comfortable to breathe in to a count of three and out to a count of four.

Try breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth.

Between contractions, have sips of water to prevent your mouth from becoming dry.
