Flat and inverted nipples
Correct latch is extremely important for success of long term breastfeeding. While most nipples protrude and are easy for baby to grasp, there are some variations in size and shape that make it difficult for moms to nurse their baby successfully. In order for a baby to nurse effectively, he must be able to grasp the nipple and stretch it forward and upward against the roof of his mouth. Flat or inverted nipples may make it difficult for your baby to give correct hold of the nipple. These simple tips can help a mother with flat or inverted nipples breastfeed:
1. Feed as often as possible. Frequent suckling is the best nipple shaping exercise.
2. Use of breast pump before nursing can help a baby latch properly.
3. A syringe can be also used to draw out nipples before breast feeding. Cut the syringe from the nozzle side evenly as shown in the figure 3 with dotted lines. Take out the plunger and insert from the cut side. Draw out the nipple from the other side with the help of plunger. (ref: see the picture 3)
4. Breast shields are also useful for both flat and inverted nipples.
